Project Title
Wood Accented Home Office & Art Studio
Project Description
I have a fairly large living room/dining room. It is currently empty so I am starting with nothing. A traditional living room really doesn't work for my lifestyle. I am recently separated (thus the empty room), although I had a beautiful living room before, we used the room maybe 5 times in 10 years. In saying that I want to make the space usable.

I would like to use the room as combined office/art studio. The room is also right off the dining room. I am including that in this project in case you have some creative ideas on how to combine the two spaces. Because I will need some kind of work table in the studio, I am thinking that could also act as a dining table, then maybe the current dining area could be used for something else. I am not sure, that is why I need you guys.

Below is a list of things that are important to me.

1. I really need storage for both books and art supplies. I

2. I am imagining the wall to the left of my front door as you enter the room would work well with cabinets/book shelves, but would also like an area to put a television.

3. I am a graphic artist and I work with two monitors and with my laptop open next to me so I need space for that.

4. A coworker often comes and works with me at my house, I need a space for her to work on her laptop.

5. I need an area where I can place my easel for when I want to paint (maybe the current dining area?)

6. A table on hydraulics might be a good solution for me. Sometimes when I work on art I like to stand. Sometimes I like to sit.

7. I am not sure there will be enough room, but it would be nice if we could somehow incorporate a love seat so that the space could also be used to relax and watch TV. Alternately if we can find chairs that can be used for both working on the computer, but would also be comfortable enough to turn around when someone wants to relax and watch TV that would be good.

8. I like an eclectic look and I really love mid century modern.

Masculine
What type of sunlight does this room receive?
Morning light
What do you currently dislike about the room?
Everything in the room is going. I want to use the space as a studio/office and not as a living room/dining room. See my notes below.

It's not that I don't like the room, it's just that a traditional living room/dining room doesn't work for me. We have lived here for over 10 years and have sat in there only a few times.

What pieces of existing furniture, lighting, art or accessories do you want to keep in the design?
I don't have any existing furniture. The floor has to stay, it is porcelain tile that is new. It basically looks like saturnia and is neutral.
Are you open to changing your wall colors?
Yes
Do you have a preference for either paint or wall covering, or are you open to both?
Open to both
Are you open to changing your floor covering?
No

I am not sure, that is why I need you guys.

Below is a list of things that are important to me.

1. I really need storage for both books and art supplies. The two photos at the very end are of my 'art cart'. I am not suggesting we use it (it's not attractive) Basically it is just a giant tool box. I have not had a dedicated space to create art before and the reason I got it is so that I could wheel it into the kitchen when I wanted to work. However I would say that 75% of my art supplies do fit in and I like that it has wheels.

Even though it will be in the 'living room' (maybe?) I can also use that as a place to serve dinner so I can use the current dining room as the area where I set up my easel.

This however is optional, I don't want it to be cluttered.

8. I like an eclectic look and I really love mid century modern.

9. I LOVE gallery walls and definitely want to include one.

10. In the dining room where I will be painting, I would like something I can wipe off easily for the floor (so definitely not carpeting) I will use drop cloths anyway, but just in case it would be good to have something there.

11. I am going to put the photos I added above into a power point with a few ideas I have for you. I don't want to stifle your creativity at all, I just want to share some ideas I have.

12. Lighting is going to be important. Currently there is no light in the ceiling in the living room area at all. Although I like the existing dining room light, I think it may look odd if we are not going to have a table there because it was meant to be in the middle of the table. Most of the time I work on art in the evenings and not as much during the day.

13. I am not sure about permanent wallpaper, but I have been seeing a lot of removable wallpaper. We may want to incorporate that somewhere but don't need to. Just paint is fine too.

Combined Living/Dining:

Since your room is large your color options with this room are quite broad

For your main color, we chose to use black because it is authoritative, sophisticated, and powerful. It is a good neutral counterpart to any other color. Black can help to give depth to a room as well as make a dramatic statement.

Use an eggshell finish paint which has a very light touch of shine (similar texture to an eggshell as implied by its name). This finish is very often used for walls and is more durable and easier to clean than matte finish
