What’s better than retreating to a gorgeous vacation space that has the comforts of home? With short-term rentals becoming increasingly popular, homeowners have to put more effort into designing their spaces in order to attract renters. A fresh, thoughtful design makes the best first impression online.

Decorilla recently completed three projects for clients posting on Airbnb. Here’s a sneak peek at the design transformations!

1. A COLORFUL TOWNHOUSE

A newly renovated 1740 brick townhouse with dark wide plank wooden floors is the perfect space for weekenders and visitors in the quaint town of Hudson Bay, NY. The owners’ goal was “to keep things cozy and functional”- with their Airbnb room design ideas.

Decorilla designer Tabitha M, made the most of the space, with an emphasis on comfy and fun, but also was mindful to make sure the home could accommodate up to 7 guests at once. Fluffy sofa beds, a large square dining table, and bright pops of color were perfect additions to this Airbnb rental.

Designer Pro Tip: Color affects mood. Bright and bold selections like the oranges, yellows, and teal selected are energetic and playful, creating a happy Airbnb room design.

2. AN AWKWARD SPACE

It’s easier to design a space when it’s a neat normal shape, but what should you do when a guest room design is irregular or awkward? Furniture layout inevitably becomes the greatest challenge.

In her Auckland rental, this client couldn’t figure out how “to make the rectangle shape seem less like a bowling alley and more like separate areas in a big space.”

Highlighting the eclectic style of the home, Decorilla designer Rachel H. cleverly used spatial magic in this Airbnb room design. Taking into account the client’s dream of incorporating a gas fireplace to cozy up the room in winter, the plan includes built-in shelves and cabinets to optimize storage. This leaves room for a natural configuration that comfortably seats six.

Designer Pro Tip: When possible, lift furniture off the floor to make a space feel larger and easier to work with. Wall shelves and pieces on casters or legs offer more possibilities for lay outs that make sense.

3. THE FUNCTIONAL HOME

When you’re working with small spaces, sourcing furniture pieces that are ultra functional is key. In a recent studio project, the client’s goal was to have layout ideas that would work in several ways.

The result in this airbnb room design is small but comfortable aided by mindful furniture selection. Swivel chairs that can be moved around and free standing shelves to distinguish living room area vs. bedroom area are clever choices.

Designer Pro Tip: Decor dividers are a great way to separate spaces in open floor plans, particularly studios. Think shelving, screens, and curtains. Check out this HGTV post for more savvy ideas.
