Project Title:
Transitional Living Room in Brown and Grey
Project Description:
We would like to redesign our living room, top to bottom. We would like stylish, but sturdy furniture. My husband is 350 lbs and I am about 200, and we have 2 very active little boys (5 and 7) who have been know to hang upside down on the couch, chairs, have pillow fights with throw pillows, etc, so dainty furniture would not last in our home. We have wanted to do this for awhile, but were finally motivated because our favorite Lane recliner that is about 18 years old recently broke. Our taste is kind of eclectic--we like traditional, contemporary, and quirky pieces. (When choosing the opening picture we struggled because we liked pieces from each picture, but almost none of them as a whole). We both work full time and would not do well with lots of knick-knacks/shelving with small spaces that needs lots of attention for dusting or would break easily with an errant thrown pillow, ball, etc. Also, if you look at our current space since we don't have a designing bone in our body we have never put pictures, shelves, curtains, or anything up because we just never knew what to do, so we never did anything. My husband is going to get rid of all his speakers and replace them with a small sound bar, so that space will be free to use. We want to leave the baseboards and windows as wood, would prefer not to paint them. We often use the fan, but are open to replacing/changing out, etc and in general feel we could use more lighting in the area. The treadmill will move to another room. We don't have pets now (we had 2 cats that passed), but plan in the future (next few years) to get a cat and a dog. Our couch now is a large sectional, which isn't bad, but sags in the places everyone repeatedly sits and I don't like the "pillow" back because the boys constantly take the pillows off the couch/rearrange them so you end up sitting against the hard wood back. I would prefer a couch without a "pillow" back that I can just add some throw pillows. I have been leaning towards a non-sectional couch with multiple chairs or a love seat, but I am open to whatever. The room is kind of narrow, but long so I never knew what furniture to choose or how to best arrange the furniture to see the TV. While we don't eat in the living room, my 5 year old has been known to have peanut butter, chocolate, yogurt, you name it on his clothes that then gets transferred to the furniture when he sits on it. So, something easy to clean with a pattern or something to hide "oops" moments? White/light furniture I don't think will be our friend. :) Also, we kind of like the green/grey color of the walls, but are open to change too. (The color works well with the purple accent wall and joins up nicely to the chocolate brown dining room.) We also know we need new carpet/flooring, but don't know what to pick---we would need help with color, style, pattern, etc. Sorry if this is too long!

Photos of your room:
Room Label:
My Living Room
I want this room to feel more masculine/feminine/neutral:
Neutral
What type of sunlight does this room receive?:
Mid-day light
What do you currently dislike about the room?:
It has no flow or decoration--it is very utilitarian. It is a southern facing room, so it gets TONS of natural light during the day, but at night the only light source is from the ceiling fan. We generally do not eat in the living room, but the adults do have beverages/snacks at night while watching TV after the kids go to bed. However, there is really no where to put a glass of water, etc if you are sitting on the couch unless you put it on the floor. Both my husband and I feel like the space isn't being utilized to its full potential.
What pieces of existing furniture, lighting, art or accessories do you want to keep in the design?:
We will be keeping the TV, Playstation, and the cable box and I am partial to my Christmas cactus and my aloe plant (probably in new pots tho). All else is fair game. We do want to keep the ceiling fan because we often use it in the fall and spring, but we are open to a different one/one with different lighting, etc.
Are you open to changing your wall colors?:
Maybe
Are you open to changing your floor covering?:
Yes, Wood, Tile, Carpet, Area Rugs, Open to any
Additional comments to designers:
I don't have a copy of a floor plan, sorry! Please read my beginning summary for the history on our family and our needs for sturdy and kid-resistant furniture. :) Thanks!
Ps. It may be hard to see in the picture, but the green/grey on the walls is Sag Harbor Grey from Benjamin Moore (at the time it was painted the code on the can was HC 95). The purple accent wall is Dessert Shadows from Benjamin Moore (2114-30).
