Project Description:

We just bought our home and need to furnish almost every room. The rooms are large, but dated. We're changing the floors to light European Oak floors throughout. The downstairs will be in a herringbone pattern and the upstairs in a straight lay pattern.

Our favorite style is eclectic/midcentury modern/a little bit of glamorous, all with clean lines and cohesiveness.

For the downstairs rooms (combined living room/dining room, combined kitchen/family room and entry), the walls will be painted white, with doors and window frames painted black. The floors are being changed to European Oak herringbone floors in a light natural color (see picture). We have a lot of family movie nights so we need comfy, but "tight looking" sectionals or couches + chaise (with the chaise part large enough for an adult and a child to lie down on together) in the family and living rooms.

1. Very little natural light.

2. This room doesn't get much light so I'd like to find a way to lighten it up.

3. The island countertop is being changed.

4. I don't like the fireplace bench area and framing around the fireplace - maybe paint it?

5. The dark floors will be changed to a light European Oak herringbone (see attached picture)

6. I don't like the chandeliers over the granite countertop

7. The shutters in the middle of the bookshelves will be replaced with drywall to close off this space

8. I'm removing all window coverings as the room doesn't need them

I'm attaching a picture of the herringbone floors that will be installed throughout the first floor rooms. Also, I've ordered the same couch for this room as the one you recommended for the living room, except this couch will be a light cream/ivory color.

Additional comments to designers:

The combined kitchen and family room is very functional, but it's dated and feels really heavy (dark island base, brown tones on island countertop, dark and heavy chandeliers). Also, this room gets very little light which makes everything look darker and heavier. We're changing the dark floors to light herringbone floors (see attached picture) so that should help but we'd like the rooms to feel lighter and more up to date.

For the kitchen space, we just need help with (a) the island base paint color;(2) accessories; (3) new chandeliers over the island; (4) Four barstools; and a chair for the built in desk.

For the family room area, we need help with decorating the entire space. Please add a tv in the arched alcove - maybe sitting on top of an interesting sideboard piece? We have the tv so no need to shop for this.
