Project Description:

My family and I (myself, my husband, daughter Arianna 8 years old and son Donny 6 years old + Australian Shepherd dog Maia) have recently moved into a new construction home and mostly starting from a blank slate.
We are looking to complete the whole house in phases and starting from the ground floor.

We have spent the majority of our adult lives in California (north and most recently SoCal) but moved to NJ. We have a very west coast style - Santa Monica with a touch of Joshua Tree/Desert with some Palm Springs mixed in. We have trouble putting our finger exactly on what our style label is - we put Transitional below but see us as a mix of a little of everything - boho, midcentury, eclectic, nods to cottage and traditional. We like touches of risks but nothing too crazy - enough for personality! I (sarah) am more boho and my husband (dante) is a bit more mid century/modern.

We also are big outdoor lovers /Pacific Northwest lovers and want to bring that into our home as much as possible too. We want to be rooted in greyscale naturals with punches of color.

While we aren't afraid of colors we do want our space to enjoy the light and airy sunlight we have coming into our home - sunshine makes us smile!

not that I dislike but room is all hard angles, feels like it needs something circular in it like a circle mirror. There is an existing runner on the staircase that is white and blue so need the room to compliment that. See pics.

Dining room has nice wood paneling and a tray ceiling with a layer of light lighting within the ceiling. Need furniture in dining room to hold nice pottery (not to be shown, just to be stored), table cloths, napkins, etc. We eat in here every night but will also use for family gatherings on weekends as we host family over a lot.

Thinking that wallpaper could be considered above the wood paneling - or paint color with patterned window drapes. Also want to change the lighting fixture.

Looking for window coverings (drapes + curtains), faces the front so coverings will have to be mirrored to a certain extent with reading room (not part of this design project but room on other side of entryway with same front facing windows).

What do you currently dislike about the room?:

Room is open floor plan living room to kitchen with a large open space that is behind what is the couch and into the kitchen - like a rectangle. We do not want to put a kitchen table there (as you see in the staging photo) as we use the nearby dining room for eating so it is space that could be better used - perhaps as a impromptu seating area that can be turned into a nice hosting area when we have guests over (using poofs and an oversized ottoman?) as this would be accessible to the dry bar/butler pantry. The area is a through way between back door to front door so can't be too blocked.

wall between butler panty/dry bar and front hall is very blank and could use decoration or art of some sort.

Kitchen windows on side face directly into neighbors house, minimal privacy.

We want to keep ceiling fan in living room. Do not change color of cabinets, counter tops or kitchen hardware. Do not change fireplace.

Looking for window coverings throughout, but want to make sure natural light isn't blocked or view of backyard. We are open to changing the lighting in kitchen (2 lights that hang over island and over kitchen sink.

Want a sectional couch with a chase. All fabrics must be child and dog friendly. Do not want to spend a ton of money on the sectional since it will likely get destroyed by children and dog.

Kitchen island fits 2 barstools.

Since your room gets plenty of sunlight your color options are quite broad.

For your main color, we chose to use white/off-white as it offers a fresh, clean, feel to the space. White and off-white colors are often a favorite for walls because they are light, neutral, and match most color schemes. They are known to make rooms feel more airy and spacious.

Use an eggshell finish paint which has a very light touch of shine (similar texture to an eggshell as implied by its name). This finish is very often used for walls and is more durable and easier to clean than matte finish
