What drives you to design?
My interest in the arts, design and appreciation for beauty really started at home during the early stages of my life. I spent most of my childhood in both my grandparents' sustainable farm and my other grandparents' modern and stylish room & board hotel in the city. I also lived in my mother’s fashion studio that she used to run. I remember so many times trying to change the small and messy rooms of the studio/home to a more appealing and organized space, including redoing the existing furniture. At the farm I really appreciated the typical colonial rustic style furniture and the large space of the farmhouse... it was simple but substantial. I also brought with me strong impressions and feelings from the B&B Inn. It was stylish, elegant and filled with decorating details. Overall, what I really remember and have learned from the eclectic worlds of my life was that everybody was concentrating on creating a welcoming environment; where they loved to have the family and friends gathering around; talking, cooking, drinking, playing and laughing. Combining comfort, beauty, lifestyle and people is the recipe for my designs.
From where do you draw most of your inspiration?
As I described above, my inspirations come from how people like to live, express themselves...their needs in general. However, it also comes from observing nature, the personality of the space that I am designing, from traveling and perceiving how other people live and design their spaces. I am constantly checking out what is going on in the market and with successful designers, from my photography and from all the media out there: magazines, books, Internet, etc. I am a big reader of interior design magazines and a book collector! Lately, I became a 'Pinterest pinner', where I keep all my inspiration boards, ready to use anytime because I am running out of space in my basement and shelves.
What’s your prediction for the next big trend in design?
We are all transferring our paper stuff and communication to the virtual world. We all have access to much more information than before via online… We are becoming more demanding and smarter consumers. People always have been in search of the best deals. Not everyone had access to everything, except if we hired a specialized professional. But now with the power of information out there it is easy for people to make their own decisions much faster, easier and affordable sometimes. People want to live well. They want to be fashionable. They want to impress. They want to compete. Thus, online and affordable design is one of the preeminent tendencies right now and in the future.
