Project Description:

New construction. We are pouring footings now. I am looking for help designing the upstairs rooms of my home. This is going to be a space for guests who stay for extended periods of time (large bunkroom & bathroom), my daughter and her friends to hang out (living/rumpus room). I also plan to have a portion of the rumpus room for exercise. I have an exercise bike and mat/weights. And when we are empty nesters -- my husband would like to put a golf simulator up there (that's at least 5-10 years off).

My husband has requested an "Irish Pub" feel to the upstairs. But I don't want cheesy HGTV type room. Maybe more of a Gatsby feel? I want all three spaces to transition nicely and have the same vibe. This could be an opportunity to incorporate some fun in to our home. I want guests to be comfortable as we do frequently have long term guests stay with us and that is the main purpose of this space.

We originally wanted to set this room up as a bunk room with 2 queen beds on bottom and twin on top. But I've been told by many people that it is difficult to make bunk beds like this. So then I thought maybe it makes sense to put 2 larger beds only? I'm not sure what to do here. I like the look of bunk rooms.

This space will be used as a seating area and family room space. We have a media room downstairs so the focus of this room is not TV but hanging out and visiting. I imagine something like a lounge with tables, chairs, sofas. I also want guests to have space to keep snacks and beverages handy (little sink, dishwasher and under counter fridge). I will also use this space for exercise as I have a spin bike, hand weights and foldable floormats. My husband imagines our upstairs space to have an Irish pub feel. I kind of like the idea of a Gatsby feel?

Since your room gets plenty of sunlight your color options are quite broad.

For your main color, we chose to use white/off-white as it offers a fresh, clean, feel to the space. White and off-white colors are often a favorite for walls because they are light, neutral, and match most color schemes. They are known to make rooms feel more airy and spacious.

Use an eggshell finish paint which has a very light touch of shine (similar texture to an eggshell as implied by its name). This finish is very often used for walls and is more durable and easier to clean than matte finish
