Project Title:
Relaxing Coastal Patio with Grill & Pool
Project Description:
We live in South Florida. We purchased this home 8.5 years ago and 5 years ago we fully renovated the back yard. We are in a different stage today. Both our kids are off to college and now that we have lived with this space for 5 years we would like to update and tweak the space to be more functional for where we are in life today.
Our home has a Coastal Vibe. We prefer to use blues: navy, aqua, whites....... Not a fan of red, orange, yellow, pink, etc.
We have 3 hunting dogs that love to hunt lizards. We have lots of them in Florida. The dogs paw at the furniture and use their snouts to go after the lizards. They have chewed at the weave on our current furniture to get to the lizards that hide in the gaps between the weave. We would like our new furniture to be low maintenance, quick drying, and dog friendly.
Pergola:
We want to keep the Pergola structure but want to redo the summer kitchen, tv wall and all of the furniture. The current placement of the summer kitchen isn’t great. Every time it rains, the “grill” end gets soaked. The granite countertop easily stains and is not attractive. We want a new grill and side burner, ice maker, refrigerator, storage, and anything else you can think of.
The TV wall is on the WEST side of the pergola. The tv itself faces east and the sun beats on it all day. It is hard to watch it during the day due to the glare from the sun. Lastly, it attracts tree frogs. They love to hang out on the back of the TV. It’s their new home. They use the bathroom where they sleep which destroys the TV and creates unsanitary conditions and a terrible stench. We’ve tried a TV cover, but that was worse. Right now we have bags of mothballs zip tied to the TV mount to keep them away. We don’t want this to be our long term solution.
Our GC suggested we build an entertainment wall, using the same accent stone we have on the summer kitchen, patio columns and the front of the jacuzzi. The wall would include an enclosure for the tv, audio component storage and an electric fireplace insert for ambience. We are not saying this is the answer just that the suggestion is on the table.
Currently there is no running water in the Pergola. We are open to doing that. We have a wet bar in our home that backs up to the patio overhang. It’s the area that has multiple angled walls. It would be easy to access the water line. One thought is to a built in beverage station with fridge, ice maker, sink and storage.
Patio Overhang:
No clue what to do here. We are open to anything, built-ins for storage, beverage station, sitting space, dining space. We just want to be sure that the overhang blends with the Pergola and rest of patio.
We are considering installing automated hurricane roll down screening. This would serve the purpose of shade and rain protection. The overhang is 14’ high. when it rains, over half of are under the overhang gets soaked. The sun from the East is intense. The back of our house faces south, so we get lots of sun all day long. The impact screening would provide an easy place for us to store all of the backyard stuff when a hurricane is approaching. Much better than dragging half of the furniture around to the front of the house to cram into the garage and bringing the other half into the house.
We know we want a dining space, a sitting space, bar space with swivel bar stools, 4 loungers, side tables for the loungers, 3 umbrellas ( 2 for loungers and 1 for pool sun deck).
We have 6 Adirondack chairs made out of Polywood and a fire pit that we are going to keep. We have a table that seats eight that we would like to keep. It was custom made. It has an etched metal top that’s sealed with an epoxy that’s used by a high end car manufacturer. It’s really cool. We are open to looking at other suggestions.
We are going to attach pictures of everything for you to reference.
