Modern Victorian Family Room Design

Project Description

We have a construction team redesigning our family room to create a media wall with floor to ceiling shelving, gas fireplace, etc. for a cozy, den like feel in our modern Victorian home. Need some assistance with selecting and placement of furniture, as the layout of the room is tricky. We’re still finalizing a few details with regard to the hearth and fireplace surround (granite vs tile etc.) and I will update the designer as these are finalized. Have decided on paint color for media wall as farrow and ball studio green, but not for rest of room or any contrast, so open to hearing ideas!

What do you currently dislike about the room?

The difficulty with finding furniture that accommodates seating for all of us, but doesn’t take up the whole room. Not being able to figure out where to actually place the furniture as there are so many doors leading to other rooms (mud room, dining room, foyer, kitchen).

What pieces of existing furniture, lighting, art or accessories do you want to keep in the design?

We’ve purchased a Samsung frame tv to place within the design. All elements of construction design to remain (e.g. color, electrical a, etc). Would like to try to use rug as it is pretty new, but not sure if it will coordinate. The sofa is also only 6 months old, but willing to replace because it’s probably too large for the room and won’t color coordinate anymore. Love how comfy it is though (the base pulls out as a big footrest)!

Additional comments to designers

This will be a very used room! Main area for hanging out and TV watching. So while we are looking to upgrade its looks to match with all the other work we’ve done to the house, it has to be very comfortable, very livable, and very durable. We have cats that have scratched sofas in the past, so we have to be very careful about the material we select (and don’t like to spend TOO much money on it, as they typically get replaced due to wear and tear within a few years). I also want the space to have some functionality for my 2.5 year old to continue to live/play in while we’re hanging out. Love tufted velvet as a potential for an ottoman?

Living Room:

Since your room gets plenty of sunlight your color options are quite broad.

For your main color, we chose to use greige because it is neutral and seen as elegant and classy. It compliments many colors such as white, blue, and yellow and works well as part of a color scheme in any room.

Use an eggshell finish paint which has a very light touch of shine (similar texture to an eggshell as implied by its name). This finish is very often used for walls and is more durable and easier to clean than matte finish
