Project Description:

We are purchasing a vacation home that we will use for vacation rentals and personal use on the Eastern shore of Maryland near St. Michaels, MD. The home is a cabin style home with plenty of wood outside and in. We would like the interior decor to depart from the cabin feel because of the amount of wood already present. We would like a modern feel that also reflects the outdoor beauty of the location and nautical themes without being kitschy. Clean modern lines over stuffy/traditional is important and avoiding kitschy vacation style design. Furniture should be durable to renters. We would like to start with the "great room" which is a space that runs across the rear of the house and includes a family sitting area and currently a billiards table that will be removed. In addition, there is a wall that divides the billiards area from the dining room we plan on taking down (see pictures). We prefer this space (the billiards room) be a lounging area because it has a great view of water in the rear. Depending on how this design goes, we may work in additional rooms of the cabin into Decorilla.

We don't like the billiards table because it is a waste of space that would make for a great lounging area facing the water in the rear to the west (sunsets over the water). In addition, we don't like the traditional style furniture they have in the living areas and are instead looking for a modern style with sleeker lines to contrast with the wood. The feeling should be an escape for vacationers rather than a traditional living room space. In addition this room opens up to a back deck beyond which is water and protected wetlands within 30 feet. So we want the interior to reflect and compliment the outdoor beauty.

What pieces of existing furniture, lighting, art or accessories do you want to keep in the design?:

All the furniture will leave with the sellers. There is some possibility the octagon table in the center of the room with the sailboat on it may stay as it was designed for that space and the seller may leave it.

We are purchasing this house and it is filled with furniture from the current owner that will go away. So we are furnishing from scratch. We attached pictures of the great room which on one end has a fireplace with surrounding furniture and on the other end is a billiards table and hanging lamp. The billiards table and lamp will go. In addition there is a wood paneled wall that separates this billiards room from the dining room and we plan on removing that wall to open up space to the dining room.

Since your room gets plenty of sunlight your color options are quite broad.

For your main color, we chose to use light gray because it is neutral and seen as elegant and classy. It compliments many colors such as white, blue, and yellow and works well as part of a color scheme in any room.

Use an eggshell finish paint which has a very light touch of shine (similar texture to an eggshell as implied by its name). This finish is very often used for walls and is more durable and easier to clean than matte finish
