Project Description:

I am interested in freshening up my living room, entry, stairwell, dining room and a second living room that is off of my kitchen. It is all an open space where everything can be seen from each room. I would like the spaces to feel cohesive, carefully chosen, but also to allow room for comfort. I appreciate well made furniture and interesting pattern combinations when putting well made fabrics together. I like mixing antiques and new pieces so that my home looks curated over time.

I am particularly interested in new rugs, new fabrics for pillows, new accent chairs, new lighting, new dining room table and chairs. I have a husband, two boys and two dogs so nothing can be too precious.

What do you currently dislike about the room?:

I feel that the room is not cohesive within itself and with other parts of a house, specifically the dining room, the other living room, the entryway, and the stairwell. The dining room table is outdated.

What pieces of existing furniture, lighting, art or accessories do you want to keep in the design?:

I am keeping the chandelier in the dining room. Its diameter is 34 inches. I am also keeping the two chandeliers in the kitchen (24 inch diameter each). Although I’m not really redesigning the kitchen you can definitely see them from the second living room so I include photos of them.

I’d like to keep the green and off white curtains in Living room 2.

I'd prefer to keep the 2 paintings somewhere in the redesign. I also have a family clock from the 1800s I'd like to put somewhere.

The couch and the coffee table are fairly new and I’d like to keep them. The sideboard is IO Metro and I like it enough to keep it if you choose. I can see how all of this doesn’t really go together though. The priority is creating a cohesive look so I’m willing to discard anything you say is not working.

The room gets plenty of natural light and I'm very happy about that. I also love the wood floors. All of the walls and moldings on this floor were painted white about 4 years ago. I'd consider repainting but I'd need some convincing on that front. I've considered using wallpaper or paint on the dining room wall that the sideboard is on do give more dimension to the space. I've considered doing the same in the stairwell. My major reason for enlisting your help is 1) to coordinate the entry and stairwell chandeliers with the existing Dining room and Kitchen chandeliers, 2) to coordinate new rugs for Living room 1 and 2, and possibly in the Dining room, 3) to create a cohesive feel throughout the house. I practically have an identity crises once I am trying to coordinate multiple pieces of furniture. I like Traditional, Transitional and Mid Century Modern styles.

Basically it's the same cohesive issue I've already mentioned. The 2 side chairs need replacing. I don't think the rug (9 x 12) is big enough for this space.

The coffee table.

The Kelly Ventura painting above the fireplace.

The wooden side table was my grandmothers so I'd prefer to keep it if possible. I could also move it to the 3rd living room down stairs.

There is another family clock in this room that is 100 years old. I'd like to keep it somewhere in the overall floor design.

Since your room gets plenty of sunlight your color options are quite broad.

For your main color, we chose to use white/off-white as it offers a fresh, clean, feel to the space. White and off-white colors are often a favorite for walls because they are light, neutral, and match most color schemes. They are known to make rooms feel more airy and spacious.

Use an eggshell finish paint which has a very light touch of shine (similar texture to an eggshell as implied by its name). This finish is very often used for walls and is more durable and easier to clean than matte finish
