Project Description

I have an open concept living room/dining room/kitchen that needs some serious help. Our furniture is over 10 years old and has made 3 moves, one across the country. I love cozy chic with a bit of glam, but don't want something that will become dated quickly. We have kids and dogs, so we need durable furniture!

I am not a fan of bright colors, I would be ok with some muted tones like blush or copper.

The living room section of this room tends to feel too enclosed for me. It faces north so we don't get a lot of natural light, so making it feel more open and airy is the goal.

I love lots of various textures, wood, and would like to bring in some plants (faux).

I am always a fan of tastefully displayed family photos.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE good lighting. I think lighting can really make a room feel elegant and high class. I'm open to wired lighting and plug in options. We have pot lights, which we hate using because of how harsh the lighting is.

The living room is the room we spend the most time in as a family and with friends.
The dining room is rarely used. It just doesn't feel very functional and comfortable, but we'd prefer to use that if we loved it.

I'm a total lover of wall coverings and interesting texture on the walls. Any advice for that is great, too.

I have plans to upgrade the kitchen in the future and can include the countertop that I love and want to incorporate someday.

What do you currently dislike about the room?

The living room feels very dark and confined. It faces north so it doesn't get a ton of sunlight. I want it to flow well, be functional and comfortable but still look like a million dollar house!

The dining room is narrow, so I've struggled to figure out the right size table and storage. I want seating for at least 10 in this room. (It has the length for that).

What pieces of existing furniture, lighting, art or accessories do you want to keep in the design?

There is nothing I'm eager to keep. I'm ready for a total overhaul.

Additional comments to designers

I do plant to upgrade the kitchen in the future. My ideal is to have an island that is a charcoal gray color with the Cambria Bentley quartz countertop.
I plan to put in light gray/light taupe colored cabinets with a larger, commercial sized stove with the same quartz as a backsplash above the stove. So I really like that charcoal gray/ chalkboard black accent along with blends of gold, chrome, and iron hardware/fixtures.

Since your room is large your color options with this room are quite broad

For your main color, we chose to use white as it offers a fresh, clean, feel to the space. White and off-white colors are often a favorite for walls because they are light, neutral, and match most color schemes. They are known to make rooms feel more airy and spacious.

Use a matte finish paint because it will be helpful in camouflaging those surface imperfections such as bumps and cracks as it does not reflect light. Just be careful because matte finish is more difficult to clean. You may also need to touch up scratches or marks by adding more of the same paint in the future.
