Eclectic Spanish Revival Interior Update

Project Description:

I recently purchased this1925 Spanish Revival located in mid-city Los Angeles. The main home is a 2-bedroom, 1 bath home for me, my daughter and mom who lives in the studio in the back. This is a new chapter in our lives, and we are starting fresh with very few pieces of furniture. A blank slate!

The home has a lot of character—barrel ceilings, arched windowpanes, arched entryways, textured walls, galley kitchen, round breakfast nook, hardwood floors and pocket doors. I want the design to embrace the history and architecture of the home and include a mix of Spanish and art-deco influence, vintage pieces and the warm jewel tones that were popular during the 1920s. Since the space is for me and my 3-year-old daughter the home furnishings needs to be child-friendly, e.g., easy-clean darker fabrics (nothing white), no sharp edges, minimal glass, easy to wipe-clean, stain-resistant surfaces, durable case goods, etc.

I want to embrace color, texture, and pattern throughout the home. My favorite designer of the moment is Kelly Wearstler. I love the playfulness and unique look of her designs. I love how each design has a well-balanced graphic design palette with strong use of color, texture, pattern and just-right juxtaposition of masculine and feminine, soft and hard. I also like the playfulness and color of Jonathan Adler, but don’t want to be too glam in this house. I want to include vintage pieces, custom upholstery and drapery so that the house a custom feel. I love perusing vintage stores and used furniture sites. I'm not a fan of a bunch of veneer pieces made in China. Although I'm realistic that some things will be off the shelf. I just don't want my house to look like a tear sheet from Restoration Hardware. It should feel unique and thoughtfully put-together.

I really need help with achieving the right scale and layout in each room, balancing vintage and modern pieces, pairing rugs with upholstery fabrics, drapery, bedding, and overall lighting design so that my wild eyes don't create too much of a hot color/pattern mess.

Brown walls, fireplace tile, cheap curtains. Gets a lot of light, maybe too much during the day and is super dark at night. Not sure I can install a chandelier with these ceilings, but would like to add wall sconces to brighten it up at night.

What pieces of existing furniture, lighting, art or accessories do you want to keep in the design?:

Sofa, end table, rug, tv, maybe the credenza, maybe the floor lamp. Have to keep the desk and chair as I am working from home, but am open to setting up in other locations. This one just seemed to work for the moment.

The couch is 90" wide and was the first thing I bought. I love the color. I would like the walls to be grey, similar to the photo above with the cinnamon red couch.

I bought the grammercy gold hexagon rug in the picture above and would like to use this to determine matching upholstery fabric for a chair and pillows. The rug is 9x12. Thinking of buying a used chair and having it reupholstered and would like guidance on fabric selection.

I bought the credenza online from a vintage shop, but it's not very good quality and a little too high. I do like the look of though, interesting architecture. But maybe a get a better quality vintage piece instead.

I bought the end table and floor lamp used, so not married to them. But they work for now. Need help selecting a coffee table.

I want to paint the fireplace tile and am drawn to these black and white images, but not sure if that will be too much or how to make it work with the rug and other pieces.

I want to do custom window treatments that really accentuate the windows and work with the patterns in the rug and future chair.

I am thinking about the Pancho highland cow black and white photo to go above the fireplace. Something about the image just sticks with me. And my friend is the artist of the Ace playing card picture. That will go on the wall near the door.

Finally, is there room for animal print? Maybe a bench under the window or an accent chair in the corner? Too much?

The previous homeowner used cheap curtains to cover the custom built closet. I want to add doors instead and would like help selecting the material. Should compliment the existing doors, dark wood. The room doesn't get a lot of sunlight. Otherwise it's a blank slate.

I want this room to be feminine! Mauve, blush pink, copper or cinnamon color.

I need help selecting a bed. I keep going back and forth between a wood bed to provide some sturdiness in what will be an otherwise feminine space or a custom upholstered headboard in a really fun pattern. I like the wood/wicker bed from CB2 pictured above, but also want a piece that will be timeless and not too trendy. I also like the Berlin bed from ModShop, but I would want a custom print upholstery if I choose an upholstered bed. I love all of the beds and bedrooms from Kelly Wearstler, but they are outside of my budget. I have strongly considered buying a used bed and having it reupholstered and I was super close to buying that vintage wood headboard in the pic above, but thought I should wait a moment and try to get a design established. It might still be available so who knows.

I would also like to add a desk to go against the wall opposite the bed. I need the extra storage for papers and what not and this seems like a good place for a desk.

I'm torn on the trim. The baseboards and trim around the doors are white, but the doors are dark wood. Can I repaint the trim around the doors to match the doors even though the baseboards are white? There will be areas where these two touch each other. Or do I just leave well enough alone since all of the trim in the rest of the house is white?

I was thinking this room would be golden yellow to play off the color of the rug in the living room. But totally open to suggestions.

I keep going back and forth on dining room tables. I found this stunning black stone table that I am strongly considering, see image, but don't know if it's too much and overpowers the room. I also love pedestal tables and have been considering buying a vintage dining table, see images, and then doing a custom fabric chair or new chairs to play against the vintage. Or soft velvet fabric chairs to play against the stone if I go that route. I also really love burl wood and have been stalking vintage burl furniture to see what pops up. Of course there is a JA burl table I could buy new. But feel like I should buy a used piece here and compliment with new or new upholstered chairs.

The current chandelier seems small to me, but let me know. it is currently in the center of the room.

What should I put against the wall opposite the windows? I was initially thinking a wall of antiqued mirrors similar to the image above, but I also don't have any room for books and I love books, so also considering a bookcase. But this might be too much to fit into the room.
