Project Title:
Cozy and Inviting Basement Lounge & Music Room
Project Description:
We would like to turn our basement into an upscale pub-like lounge found in an old and restored british or Irish inn. Our inspirations are Deerpath Inn in Lake Forest, IL, and Adare Manor in Ireland. We already have a pool table and home theatre, and want to convert the sitting arra into a pub/lounge room to watch tv, and sit and have tea and scones in the morning and a beer at night: we want to feel it is a destination, like a beautiful inn down the road. We like simple design and are looking for cozy, relaxing, inviting. Also we have a lot of “stuff”, so a design that gets even better when it is a bit messy! The basement has very little morning natural light. We like greens, blues and nature (a lot of trees outside), but are very open. It would be for my husband and I who are in our 60’s, plus guests which would include our adult kids. The room has a small kitchen area that could serve as a bar.
Beside the lounge room, you can see a pool / ping pong table area that will stay, but we’d like the paint and decor to go into that room. And on the other side of that is our home theatre. We are thinking to put up velvet curtains to block off the home theatre but it is open, so we’d like paint colors for that as well once the lounge area is done.
I will add we would like cozy, darker colors down there, not super dark, but mid toned dark, and dark furniture as well. We like muted colors, more earthy not vibrant. And prefer furniture that is not too light so spills don’t matter, also our dog will spend time on the furniture. Finally, we love velvet and natural textures and dark / mid toned wood.
We both play guitar - classical and electric - and will also keep our guitars here and play them!
For reference: Upstairs, we have grass cloth walls, “Green Ground” by Farrow and Ball trim and cabinets in the main area. We have Feather Down by Benjamin Moore trim and walls, and a Parchment paint technique in the dining room. We have a “spring green” olive paint on the dining room ceiling in flat and in the butlers pantry in high gloss. In the office, we have wall coverings in a light blue, Kensington Green trim, and Heavenly Blue ceiling. Mud room, kitchen island and fireplace are Chelsea Gray. Most paints are Benjamin Moore. I’ve included pictures.

Room Label:

I want this room to feel more masculine/feminine/neutral:

What type of sunlight does this room receive?:
Very little sunlight
What do you currently dislike about the room?:
It is not put together - I find it cold and stressful because it is so busy and not harmonious. The colors are cold, the furniture is not comfortable, and right now only my husband goes down to that area to watch the hockey game. There are pot lights but no ceiling fixtures or lower angle, softer lighting. Carpet also is very drab in this space. There is no focal point.
What pieces of existing furniture, lighting, art or accessories do you want to keep in the design?:
We will keep the guitars in the room, as we want this to be a lounge and music room where we can play. We need to add 2 music stands, and perhaps two armless chairs in which we can sit when we play!
All the furniture in the sitting area can go, but we’d prefer to keep the kitchen bar cabinets color and counter as is. We were thinking a darker color might make them less prominent in the room. We are open though - to paint the cabinets, add some wallpaper or tiles / texture as a backsplash, and even any wall moldings if appropriate.
My husband likes to have a lot of STUFF on the walls. Pictures, posters, signs. I hate this, it looks messy and disjointed, but it is important to him. So a design that makes that look ok, vs haphazard, would be great. That is why I was thinking pub-style, as pubs are cozy and a bit shabby :-)
We will keep the pool table / ping pong table in the adjoining room, and the floor tiles will stay. Floor is darkish gray porcelain tiles, with some violet and pinky beige color through them.
Please note our home is under a bit of construction upstairs due to water damage, which is why the basement looks so full of junk!

Additional comments to designers:
Right now, the whole basement is open concept. We don’t want to add walls - the pool table is too close to the home theatre, so you need to be able to position a cue into the theatre area. But we could put soft dividers, ie. velvet curtains, to separate the home theatre from the rest of the basement? There are really three areas - home theatre, which will stay as is, with just walls painted and perhaps curtains; pool table area, which will stay where it is, but perhaps the record player can move into the music room / lounge, and music room / lounge, which is where we want to focus. Some storage ideas for our vinyl and record player would be helpful as well.

Since your room gets little sunlight a warm, rich color will make the room look cozy and inviting.
We selected a warm brown-green paint for the main wall color to create a cozy, enveloping atmosphere that feels reminiscent of classic English and Irish pubs. This earthy tone beautifully balances green’s connection to nature with the grounding warmth of brown, helping the basement feel inviting rather than dark. The color also softens the limited natural light in the space while complementing the rich materials used throughout the design—such as chestnut trim, cognac velvet, butcher block, and terra cotta—tying the entire lounge, bar, and music area together into one harmonious retreat.

ONE-OF-A-KIND STYLE
The Impress collection of authentic, Italian-made terracotta is made through a meticulous, old-world process by skilled artisans. Crafted in small batches, surface texture is hand-applied using specialized tools to etch tiles while the clay is still wet creating a natural, weathered appearance. Tiles are then hand-dipped in glazes with a soft, matte finish, before being fired at high temperatures resulting in an organic, painterly quality.
