The client returned to Decorilla after a successful first-floor project, this time for the master bedroom design on the second floor of their Austin townhome. They wanted a high-end space with calm and relaxation built into every layer, plus enough character to stand apart from the downstairs design. Construction work and paint changes were on the table, especially for an accent wall behind the bed. The designer needed to:

Design Inspiration: Tranquil Master Bedroom Layouts
The client’s saved references for their bedroom retreat pulled toward darker, enclosed rooms. Deep, moody accent walls behind the bed appeared across most of the images, often layered with vertical wood slats or board and batten paneling on the headboard wall. These schemes absorbed light at the focal point of the room. Velvet bedding carried warmth against the dark backdrop, while woven pendants and brushed wood grain on the nightstands built the layered atmosphere of a true master bedroom retreat.
Symmetry was a common point of most of the saved layouts. Matching wood nightstands flanked the bed in nearly every reference, with lighting fixtures of varied scale breaking the strict mirroring. Vertical channel tufting ran through the headboard images, drawing the eye along the 9-foot ceiling. Warm metal accents repeated across hardware and lighting, threading consistency through the master bedroom design layouts.
Initial Concepts: Finding the Right Designer
The Decorilla team identified two professionals with strong track records for the brief: Jovanka V. and Marya W. Each delivered a preliminary moodboard that interpreted the master retreat differently, giving the client two distinct directions to weigh against the second-floor layout. Marya wasn’t entirely new to the task, as she had designed the client’s living room before.
Jovanka V. leaned into a softer, layered scheme. Her moodboard placed a fluted bouclé bench at the foot of the bed and a channel-tufted upholstered headboard against a botanical toile wallpaper. Warm wood flooring carried through underneath. Her palette ran through tobacco, vanilla, mountain grey, and mahogany.
Marya W. took the project somewhere quieter and more architectural. Her board centered on an accent wall in a deep tan-brown finish behind a low-profile upholstered bed. A console with a round black mirror and twin lamps anchored the opposite wall as a vanity zone, while a bouclé reading chair tucked into the corner alongside ceiling-rail curtains running wall to wall. The whole composition felt closer to the calm, contained master retreat the client had been gathering in their references.
After reviewing both, the client requested a second version of Marya’s moodboard with a few adjustments before committing. Marya’s revised concept moved the project forward, though the final direction also pulled selected elements from her first moodboard.
Results Revealed: Master Bedroom Retreat
The completed master retreat lands the project where the brief asked it to land. Marya delivered a tranquil master bedroom anchored by the dark blue grid wall behind the upholstered bed. Warm taupe drapery runs floor to ceiling along the window wall, and a textured oat-toned rug grounds the seating zone.
Before the design, the bedroom sat as a wide rectangle with bare walls. Furniture floated along the perimeter with no structural focus. The new layout establishes a clear primary axis on the headboard wall and repositions the bed to face the windows. Floor-to-ceiling rippled drapery that runs now along the window wall takes over the role that bare blinds and pinned fabric tried to fill in the original space.
The accent wall does most of the heavy lifting. Marya specified a custom board-and-batten grid in Salamander. Batten dimensions were resolved at three-quarter-inch width and half-inch depth after the client mocked up samples on the wall and worked through proportions with her. That depth keeps the grid reading as a modern relief at the focal wall. The squared geometry pulls the eye upward, while a picture light mounted above the framed black-and-white landscape gives the wall a defined focal point at night.
Lighting carries most of the work in a room that gets very little natural light. Each layer addresses a specific function the brief called for. Black metal sconces with linen shades flank the headboard at art-frame height, providing task light for reading. A walnut ceiling fan replaces the original brushed-nickel fixture, threading warmth from the floors back into the upper half of the room.
Blending Function with Style
A bouclé reading chair tucked into the corner alongside a small marble side table establishes a secondary zone within the room, addressing the client’s interest in functional layering. Across the long wall, a fluted dark-wood console grounds this area. Twin lamps and framed art distributed across the surface create a cohesive vignette in one composed movement.
Design Details: Sourcing the Perfect Pieces
Decorilla’s 3D renderings gave the client a chance to walk through the concept before committing to a single purchase. The model provided a clear visual reference for each decision the client weighed during the sourcing process.
