Elegant primary suite design by Decorilla

The second chapter of this whole-home luxury renovation moves upstairs, and the primary suite design more than holds its place. Marble-wrapped vanity walls, a glass-fronted walk-in closet, and the same oak tones that anchor the first floor come together in a space that feels both indulgent and cohesive. Here’s how our designer brought it to life.

The Challenge: Primary Suite, Closet, & Bathroom Design

This primary suite is part of the substantial whole-home interior design project that began with the first floor’s open plan. The designer had already established the material palette in the rooms below. In the next phase, they moved to the second floor, where the ceiling drops to 10 feet, and late-afternoon light enters the bedroom side. The client’s existing bed was staying, which meant the bedroom design should grow around a fixed anchor piece. As for the other specific challenges, the designer had to:

  • Carry the transitional framework from the first floor into a primary suite with lower ceilings
  • Integrate the existing master bed into a new scheme
  • Develop primary bathroom ideas consistent with the project’s selective spending approach
  • Design a primary closet with an island and a full-length mirror in a room with minimal natural light
  • Source high-quality materials concentrated on fewer surfaces

Design Inspiration: Elegant Primary Suite & Bathroom Ideas

The client’s saved primary bedroom ideas helped the team grasp their vision. Dark wood beds with carved or sleigh-back frames appeared often. That was expected, knowing that a similar, existing bed should also anchor the new bedroom. They were, however, mostly set against a transitional backdrop of neutral paneled walls and pale hardwood floors. Inlaid wood detailing on bedside tables showed up repeatedly, signaling the client’s preference for craftsmanship at close range. These layouts also shared a common spatial quality: the rooms felt large because the furniture count stayed low, with curtains running wall to wall to soften the perimeter.

Primary bathroom ideas in the client’s collection leaned heavily toward stone. Floor-to-ceiling marble slabs covered vanity walls, paired with floating wood cabinetry in light oak tones for a luxurious design style. Dual vanities emphasized symmetrical layouts that the client kept returning to. Brass fixtures and backlit mirrors added warmth to the stone surfaces. Material restraint was notable, with marble and wood carrying each room, and brass as the only metallic accent.

Initial Concepts: Finding the Right Designer

Decorilla typically presents two designer concepts for each project, giving clients a choice between distinct approaches. In this case, Marine H. had already proven her understanding of the client’s vision during the first-floor phase. So they moved forward with her for the primary suite design.

Marine’s bedroom moodboard centered on the client’s existing sleigh bed in dark wood, surrounded by new pieces in cream and taupe. She also proposed wall sconces instead of the common bedside table lamps. A paneled accent wall with applied moldings framed the headboard. The floor plan positioned a storage bench at the foot of the bed and a swivel armchair with an end table near the window.

Primary closet ideas, meanwhile, featured floor-to-ceiling cabinetry with glass doors and internal LED lighting. One door panel doubled as a full-length mirror, answering the client’s specific request. A vanity station sat on the window side with an upholstered ottoman. The room’s limited natural light drove the lighting strategy: LEDs inside every cabinet bay and recessed ceiling fixtures throughout.

Transitional Home Interior Design Series

This whole-home design project moved through several phases, beginning with the open plan interior of the living area.  Each phase built on the same material and spatial logic established on the first floor, carrying finishes and proportions forward as new rooms came online.

Marine carried the first floor’s material logic upstairs with precision. The primary suite and its adjacent rooms continue the transitional vocabulary established below, scaled to 10-foot ceilings and the second floor’s late-afternoon light.

Marine’s primary suite design reads as a quieter extension of the first floor’s transitional framework. The paneled accent wall behind the bed establishes the room’s vertical structure, its applied moldings scaled to the ceilings. Crown molding runs the full perimeter, while recessed downlights sit flush in the ceiling plane. The room’s elegant restraint is consistent with the client’s stated philosophy of selective investment.

The client’s existing sleigh bed in polished dark wood anchors the headboard wall. New cream bedding softens its mass. A tufted storage bench with rolled arms sits at the foot of the bed, aligned to its width. The upholstery matches the sheets and the curtain fabric. On either side of the headboard, dark wood nightstands with traditional hardware hold the existing bedroom set together visually.

Brass wall sconces flank the bed, freeing the nightstand surfaces where table lamps typically go. Marine’s moodboard specified this swap early, and the result keeps the bedside profile clean.

The reading corner occupies the window side of the room. A compact swivel armchair carries the same cream tone as the rest of the room’s fabrics. It sits beside a geometric metal end table and a slim black floor lamp. Full-length curtains run wall to wall behind the molding returns, covering the black-framed windows and adjacent wall sections.

The passage to the primary closet and primary bathroom is visible through an open doorway on the far wall.

Transforming Challenges into Creative Solutions

What the designer accomplished here is a room that feels furnished by a few considered decisions. The molding panels frame the bed and the landscape painting above it in three distinct bays, giving architectural definition to a wall that would otherwise read flat. At this ceiling height, that would also make the layout appear unbalanced and unfinished. The level 5 drywall finish the client specified for the first floor’s priority rooms carries into this bedroom as well, and the molding profiles show it: every shadow line and joint reads cleanly under the recessed downlights.

Primary Closet Attached to the Suite

The primary closet shifts the material register from the bedroom’s painted moldings to warm oak millwork. Floor-to-ceiling cabinetry lines both long walls, framed in black metal with glass door panels. LED strips run beneath every shelf bay, compensating for the room’s limited natural light. The overall effect is closer to a high-end retail display than a residential storage room, and that tone is deliberate and aligned to the client’s approach to this project.

Marine addressed the client’s specific island request by placing a six-drawer oak unit at the center of the room. Its marble top matches the stone used in the primary bathroom vanities. Black metal drawer pulls echo the cabinet frame profiles on either side. The island’s proportions leave clear circulation on all sides while providing a surface for sorting accessories and folding. Internally, the drawers are subdivided for jewelry and smaller items, similar to the kind of organized knife and utensil storage the client specified for the kitchen downstairs.

A built-in window bench with a cushioned seat runs along the far wall beneath the black-framed window. Storage drawers sit below the bench. Repeating the cadence of the living room, teal and cream pillows add the only color note in this space. This seating area replaced the desk and vanity station that Marine originally proposed in the moodboard, suggesting a revision during the design process.

One cabinet door panel on the back wall serves as a full-length mirror. This is another feature the client emphasized in their original brief. Its placement between two glass-fronted wardrobe sections means it catches and reflects the LED-lit interiors, which amplifies the room’s ambient light level.

Primary Bathroom Design Ideas

Marine’s primary bathroom design concentrates the project’s highest material investment into one room. Two types of stone dominate this space. White-and-gold veined marble covers the vanity walls and wainscoting, while a warm travertine-toned slab lines the floor and the full shower enclosure. The stone runs in large-format panels with minimal seaming.

The vanity zone follows the symmetrical dual-sink layout that appeared in the client’s primary bathroom ideas. Two floating oak cabinets sit on opposite walls, each with a fluted upper drawer band and flat-panel lower doors. Backlit mirrors in rounded brass frames are mounted directly onto the marble slabs and flanked by cylindrical glass sconces at eye height.

Inside the shower, travertine runs floor to ceiling with two recessed niches for storage. Brass rain and hand shower fixtures mount directly into the stone. The glass enclosure uses black-framed hinges and a minimal handle, consistent with the steel window frames throughout the house. Alongside, brass appears on every fixture and accessory, from the wall-mounted faucets to the heated towel rack beside the shower.

A marble half-wall partitions the wet zone at the center of the room. Two tall, narrow windows in black frames rise above it, pulling natural light from the shower to the other areas. The partition’s height provides privacy for the toilet alcove behind a paneled door to the right.

Decorilla’s 3D renderings helped the client understand how each second-floor room worked together before they made final decisions and placed orders. They could also evaluate stone selections and cabinet finishes in context and confirm vanity dimensions at actual scale.

Marine remained responsive during the build phase, as the builder flagged items that needed verification. The 102-page specification document she had prepared featured updated CAD drawings and dimensional callouts for every surface and elevation. In addition, Decorilla’s trade discounts also helped make the heavy stone investment in the primary bathroom realistic within the overall budget.

The client’s response echoed the satisfaction: “Thanks, Marine! You did a great job, and we appreciate all your hard work in transforming our home.”
