The Challenge: Create a Lived-In Design in a New Build
The client came to Decorilla with pretty clear ideas of the elements she wanted to achieve with modern rustic interior design. In practice, that meant a list of specific challenges that designer had to meet:
- Create a lived-in design that doesn’t look too “new build”
- Design a home that is practical for a family with two young kids, cats and dogs
- Choose durable and easy-to-clean materials
- Ensure the dining table can sit 8 people
- Create a flow between living, dining, and kitchen

Design Inspiration: Modern Rustic Home Design Ideas
Eclectic, mid-century, organic, rustic, southern/coastal cottage. This is how the client described the timeless, lived-in character she wanted for her home. Modern rustic decor, light walls, and a welcoming feel were common to all of the client’s inspirational images.
What tied those references together was a preference for natural materials and a room that looked gathered over time. Wood in several tones and woven textures showed up across the images, with simple, honest finishes throughout. The mix of eras kept any one look from taking over. Most importantly, it provided Decorilla designers a starting point to put together a design concept for a modern rustic living room, kitchen, and bathroom.
Initial Concepts: Finding the Right Designer
Decorilla paired the client with two designers, and each returned an initial custom concept for the home. The proposals shared her modern rustic direction, though they read differently once she saw them side by side. In the end, Sonia C.’s modern lived-in concept fit what she had in mind, and Sonia took on the project.
But that was not the end: the designer and client remained in constant contact for the entire duration of the project. This allowed them to fine-tune the initial concept to match exactly what the client wanted: a “wow” but easy-to-maintain home.
Results Revealed: Modern Rustic Home Design
Modern rustic furniture wouldn’t have been enough to give a new-build home a lived-in look. That’s why the designer proposed to layer more architectural details: vertical shiplap accents, wood beams, and herringbone oak flooring to provide a substantial modern rustic home transformation.
Living/Dining Room
The open living-dining area is the most important space in this home, so it had to be both functional and impressive. First, a neutral color palette lays the foundation for a modern rustic decor, where a mix of different types of woods gives an informal character to the space. Colorful accents in blue, green, and a hint of red make the design even more effortless and lived-in.
Two facing sofas and two vintage mid-century chairs (that the client already had) give plenty of comfortable seating for family and friends.
In front of the seating area is a long dining table that sits 8 people – as requested by the client. An organic mix of chairs and finishes ticks the eclectic requirement, carrying the effortless vibe into the dining area.
Enhancing Comfort and Livability
The brief asked for a home that could keep up with two young kids and the family’s cats and dogs. The rooms still had to feel warm and finished, which meant the practical side had to do its work quietly.
Hard-wearing surfaces now carry most of that load. Herringbone oak takes the daily traffic underfoot, and the painted cabinets wipe down after sticky hands. In the bathroom, a tiled floor holds up to whatever a busy household brings. Each of these choices suits the rustic look while also earning its keep for a family.
Kitchen Result
As the kitchen is open to the living/dining area, it was particularly important to make it flow with the rest of the space. Carrying the wooden beams and the herringbone oak flooring from the living area was the first step to create a beautiful modern rustic kitchen.
To add character, the designer decided to also paint all cabinets. The perfect choice was an all-time favorite greyish blue. Black and brass accents add a modern touch that is balanced with a shiplap wall feature and a statement farmhouse sink.
Modern Rustic Bathroom
For her master bathroom, the client wanted something with an organic feel to it. And Sonia created a modern rustic bathroom with tons of character. The aged wood of the doors here blends with the modern finish of the vanities to continue on the established effortless eclectic vibe. Black and brass accents repeat throughout the space. Additionally, tiles on the floor make this the ultimate practical bathroom for a family.
But the real wow feature in this bathroom is the bathtub nook, which is framed with graphic tropical wallpaper. This unexpected detail delivers big on style. It makes the bathtub stand out and also adds a touch of freshness to the wood.
Design Details: Sourcing the Perfect Pieces
Before anything was ordered, Sonia walked the client through the full concept in Decorilla’s 3D renderings. Seeing the rooms in three dimensions helped them validate and confirm each idea. That clarity carried her choices across the whole home. In addition, Decorilla’s trade discounts brought durable, well-made pieces within budget, which helped a family furnishing a whole new build at once.
Throughout the process, Sonia kept close to the client’s feedback, adjusting pieces and finishes as the vision took shape. She also folded in what the client already owned, so the scheme grew around pieces the family loved. The satisfaction with the collaboration was summarized in the client’s final feedback: “Hi Sonia, thank you so much for everything! Can’t wait to see how everything comes together! 🙂“
