What makes a home feel both curated and lived-in? For Decorilla designers, it begins with how people live, not just how things look. Today’s spotlight introduces Federica Piras, and her warm interiors where comfort becomes a kind of quiet order.

Meet Interior Designer: Federica Piras

Decorilla designers—Federica P

Federica’s approach to creating stylish interiors draws from years between Brazil and Paris, where she learned how restraint can coexist with a distinctive soul. Her style exudes nuanced sensibility shaped by mentorship under Arthur Casas, along with a deep appreciation for timeless craftsmanship.

As one of the prominent Decorilla interior designers, Federica builds each project with her unique instinct for lived-in imperfection. That involves natural materials, clean lines, modern features, and a few well-chosen vintage pieces that anchor memory in the present. But that’s not all—Federica also designs her own furniture.

Did interior design always interest you?

Yes, interior design has always interested me, but more generally, I love to be creative. I’ve always loved creating spaces that feel warm and cozy but also well-organized and functional. Since I enjoy spending time at home, I wanted to design environments, both for myself and for friends, that are truly welcoming and comfortable, where people feel relaxed and at ease.

How would you define your design style?

I always start by listening to my clients’ preferences, while gently guiding them with my own taste and expertise. Everyone has different opinions, and understanding that is key to creating a space that truly feels right for them. My style leans toward warm, inviting environments with clean, modern lines and natural materials. I love incorporating antique pieces to add character and warmth, creating a balanced mix that feels lived-in rather than like a showroom. I usually work with warm, light neutrals and sometimes add subtle pops of color, but I always tailor the design to the client’s specific home and lifestyle.

Who or what influences your work?

My work is deeply influenced by my time in Brazil, which was incredibly inspiring. Working with Arthur Casas, whom I consider one of my greatest mentors, shaped much of my design approach. I also draw a lot from my time in Paris, where I developed a strong passion for antique and timeless pieces. Both experiences have helped me blend modern and classic elements in a way that feels authentic and meaningful.

What’s a must-have item you include in your interior designs?

A must-have in my interior designs is a touch of personality, like a unique vintage piece, a custom-made item, a piece tied to their hobby or passion, or a wall of travel photos; it’s those details that make a space feel genuinely theirs.

What is a recent design trend that you’re loving at the moment?

Even though many trends have come and gone, right now I’m really loving curved sofas and organic-shaped furniture. They bring a softness and flow to a space that feels both modern and inviting, adding a natural elegance that balances well with clean lines.

If you had to pick a favorite room in your home, which would it be and why?

My favorite room is definitely the kitchen; it’s where all the magic happens. It’s not just a place for cooking, but a space for gathering, connecting, and creating memories. Plus, with so many materials, color palettes, and styles to play with, the kitchen offers endless opportunities to use your creativity.

What is your favorite design magazine or blog, and why?

I’d say Architectural Digest for its timeless elegance and storytelling, and Leibal for its focus on minimalism and thoughtful design. Leibal especially resonates with me because it highlights spaces where simplicity and function come together beautifully.

What is the best thing about being an interior designer?

One of the best things about being an interior designer is that inspiration can come from anywhere, traveling, exploring new cultures, architecture, or even a small café in a different country. It’s a profession that opens your eyes to beauty all around the world, and then lets you bring that inspiration back into the spaces you create.

What was your first big project, and what was your favorite part?

My first big project was a high-end apartment in Paris, in the chic Saint-Germain-des-Prés area. It was a two-bedroom, two-bathroom space, and my favorite part was definitely the styling and installation phase. When all the pieces arrive, there are almost always changes from the original plan, and that’s actually the best part. Moving furniture around, swapping table lamps from one console to another, and changing rugs—it’s during this phase that everything comes together and the design truly takes shape.

How do you manage challenges that come up during a design project?

Communication is the key. I make it a priority to keep open, honest, and frequent dialogue with clients, contractors, and suppliers. By understanding everyone’s perspective and sharing updates regularly, we can address issues quickly and collaboratively. This transparency helps prevent misunderstandings and ensures the project stays aligned with the client’s vision, even when adjustments are needed.

Why do you like online interior design?

I like online interior design because it makes quality design accessible to more people, no matter where they are. It offers flexibility and convenience, allowing clients to collaborate with me from anywhere in the world. Plus, it encourages creative use of digital tools to visualize spaces and make decisions efficiently, which can speed up the process without losing the personal touch.
