I need to redesign our upstairs living quarters after an expansion of our space. We need to redesign two adjoining rooms into a kid bedroom (for 4.5yo and 1yo) and playroom. We need a redesign of our guest room, which we hope can have work space when no one is staying. We need new furniture in our living room, with some attention to a rug in the adjoining dining room. New paint throughout.

What do you currently dislike about the room?:

The layout and the furniture and all the kid toys. The furniture is mostly 20 years old and was purchased for a different house a different time in our lives. The layout is focused on our TV, which will be moving downstairs. Half of the room is currently a play area for the baby and our preschooler, with a playmat and train table and lots of plastic toys. Hopefully all of that will be moving into the new playroom.

We mostly like the current dining room set up, but we'd like to add a rug and have more options for decorating.

We'd like to see if it's possible to have a different eating set up in the breakfast nook, something that fits a family of four, with one of the seats being a high chair for the next few years.

What pieces of existing furniture, lighting, art or accessories do you want to keep in the design?:

Living room area - we like our art, but don't need to keep it in the room. We have more throughout the house we can trade in or are open to something different. We like the vintage vases my grandma made into lamps, but the shades need to be replaced. They don't go with anything else in the house, stylistically, but I really love them. I'd be fine with them in the guest room, too.

Dining area - we love our table, chairs and the china hutch; same thoughts about the art - we like it and it can get moved around. I have a wall of plates that used to form a crescent, but we've removed lower plates from little hands' reach and some plates have broken. I'd like to keep that, or a similar concept.

Breakfast nook - we don't need to keep the table/chairs if there's another viable seating option.

We certainly lean towards midcentury modern downstairs, but I'm not sure what style will work with what we have upstairs. We have arches in the all the rooms, the fireplace is really unique and lovely, and there is hand painted decorative moulding on the ceilings of the dining area and breakfast nook.

What do you currently dislike about the room?:

I can't stand the wall color and I don't love the window shade. It currently has a dresser and a bookshelf (and a bunch of baby things, as it's where the baby sleeps). It was set up as a single function room, but we'd like it to be multi-function now. The new-construction closet is currently just dry wall and will need some creative thought, as it's an odd size.

What pieces of existing furniture, lighting, art or accessories do you want to keep in the design?:

I'm open to keeping the window shade if it really works for the room. I do like the painting in the room, but again, I'm open to using it elsewhere. If the rug works, I'm happy to keep it, but it's not necessary. It was purchased to go under a bed that is no longer there and it's pretty big for the room, which lost square footage during construction.

Our goal for this room is to have it be a comfortable guest room when guests are here, but also a space for either me or the kids (when they get older) to do work or projects. We are pretty set on having a queen murphy bed in the room. We want it to be very comfortable and very easy to take down and put up. We don't want to have to rearrange the entire room every time the bed comes down, but we're open to shuffling a few things, as the room is small. Ideally, we'd have a murphy bed that has a desk or shelves built in, that collapse or move when the bed comes down.

As for the closet, we think it will work to have some sort of drawers on the angled side and a short rod on the straight side. We're not sure if we'd need to step up into the closet to access the back of it.

We're open to creative uses of the space!

What do you currently dislike about the room?:

It's currently set up as our son August's room. It was his nursery, now it's his big kid room/playroom. We'd like to have it set up for both kids. The curtains are really flimsy ones from IKEA and I'm happy to get rid of them. We now have room darkening curtains lining the orange ones and I'm fine to keep those as a darkening backer (or not).

What pieces of existing furniture, lighting, art or accessories do you want to keep in the design?:

I'd like to incorporate a little of the art we have in there and add more. I have several posters and prints I've purchased for their rooms. They've yet to be framed.

We have two large dressers in our current bedroom that we might want to use for the kids, but I'm not sure they will both fit with two beds in the room. I also don't know that they're the right style for a kids room, but I'd like to explore keeping them.

I'm not sure if the little rug can be incorporated into either the bedroom or playroom, but I really like it. I'm also happy to move it along if it doesn't fit the new design.

It is our current bedroom and will become a playroom. If the shade can be moved to the guest room, I'd like new curtains that are more interesting for a playroom. But I'd like to keep the roller privacy shade. I don't care for the current lights in any of the back rooms. I don't like the yellow light that comes from the shade or the shape of the fixtures.

What pieces of existing furniture, lighting, art or accessories do you want to keep in the design?:

We have a textile from India that might be fun to keep in the room. It needs to be framed properly (maybe a shadow box?). I'm open to putting the rug in another room (guest room or kids bedroom?) or getting rid of it all together. I would like to put the playmat from the living room in the playroom. I have several prints I've collected that I would like to use in either the playroom or their bedroom (prints with quotes from famous Black leaders).

Use an eggshell finish paint which has a very light touch of shine (similar texture to an eggshell as implied by its name). This finish is very often used for walls and is more durable and easier to clean than matte finish
